MATHS CHALLENGE!

Today before school,  Macy took up Mrs Lunn's challenge.   She had to think of as many ways as she could to make 5! We were impressed! What an amazing mathematician!

LUCKY LUCAS!

Today Lucas received a Press Pass!   He can now write a page all by himself.  He knows how to look for words around the room and to use the dictionary cards.   If he can't find the word, he is happy to try sounding it out.   What a clever boy!  Well done Lucas!  We are proud of you.

OUR NEW TABLE!

Check out our new table!  It has whiteboard on the top so we can write on it.   Mrs Lunn LOVES it.  So do we! Here are a couple of pictures of us busy in our learning.

PIAKO TIME!

Today during Piako Time there were some challenging activities because we are learning to PERSIST!  We have made a photo story to share with you some of the challenges that we did and hope you enjoy it!

Cameron said "I think I can't do this but I'm going to keep on trying."
Allie said "I can and I will."
Amelie said "I don't know how to do this but I will keep on trying."
Zia said "I can do this."

UP, UP AND AWAY!

This was our rocket experiment.  We put some water in a film canister and put an alka-seltzer tablet in it.   We quickly put the lid on and turned it upside down. Then we waited.

Suddenly...

Pop! The film canister went shooting up in the sky!   Gas is released when the alka-seltzer tablet mixes with water.  The pressure builds up and forces the film canister up.   It's not the safest experiment we have done but it was pretty awesome!

FREELANCE WRITERS!

This is Allie and Tatum.   Today they were awarded with a Press Pass!  They are now officially Freelance Writers.   That means they can work anywhere in the classroom.

Mrs Lunn says to earn a Press Pass you must be a Competent Writer.   You need to be able to write at least a page by yourself and use flash things like adjectives in your stories.  You also need to be able to work sensibly anywhere in the room.

We wonder who will earn a Press Pass next!

BLOBS IN A BOTTLE!

We did it!   We finally found an experiment that ticks all the criteria on our IT LIST!  We made a lava lamp.   We are not going to tell you how we did it just in case we share this experiment at the Science Show in a few weeks.   We can't have you knowing our secret!

OOBLECK!

Today we made OOBLECK using corn flour,  water and food colouring.  It is the craziest thing ever!  To touch it, oobleck feels like a liquid but when you pinch it,  it feels like a solid!  We could even hit it.  We  thought it was great!  Oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid.  That means it had properties of both liquids and solids! We told you it was pretty crazy stuff!

SCATTER THE PEPPER EXPERIMENT!

Today we did another experiment.  We sprinkled pepper on a bowl full of water. Then we put some dishwashing liquid on our finger and held it in the middle of the bowl. Guess what!!! The pepper raced to the edge of the bowl!  We thought it was so cool!

We had a thought.  We wondered what would happen if we put glitter on the water.   Our hypothesis was that it would do the same thing and when we tried it ... it did!  It looked prettier too!

We found out that there is a force called surface tension. This force allows the water to bulge on the top.  The dishwashing liquid lowers the surface tension which causes the water to spread out and the pepper to move to the edges. Pretty neat!

TIE DYED MILK

Today we conducted an experiment.   We put milk in a bowl and put in a few drops of food colouring.   Then we added some dishwashing liquid.   The food colouring suddenly started swirling around in the milk. This was caused by a chemical reaction.

The dishwashing liquid bonds to the protein molecules in the milk and starts to break them apart.  The surface tension of the skin on top of the milk was also disrupted and that's why the colours started swirling towards the outside edge of the bowl.

Some of this flash science talk was a bit over our heads.  We did our best to understand but all in all,  we just thought the experiment was pretty cool!
